Rutherglens Performance

Rutherglen had a squad of 5 swimmers eligible to swim in this prestige event, however Katy Smith is on Tour in the Netherlands with her Orchestra so only 4 managed to Swim.

Our 3 boys:-  Ryan Doherty, Kieran Kiely and Tony Fletcher all swam to their best. In a programme, in retrospect of too many swims in such a short period, where nearly all swims were Personal Bests. Many of the entry times were short to long course conversions making these swims even better.

To go to a major competition and produce a PB under pressure is a sign of well prepared swimmers.

Although Ryan had the most swims and potentially the most gruelling schedule over the 4 days, he still managed some outstanding individual swims culminating in 100 Metre Freestyle, in a remarkable time of 1.00.71 (and that is Long Course). His best overall position was in the 100m Breaststroke where he came 11th. This position is somewhat misleading as in terms of Scottish Swimmers this would make him 7th. Ryan's week was completed by swimming the Breaststroke leg of the 14 and Under Medley Relay for the South Lanarkshire team where they were narrowly beaten into Silver position. Retribution was exacted in the 4x50 Metres Freestyle Relay where they easily took the Gold.

Hilary Gorman took part in the Girls relay teams and just missed the medals in both the Medley and Freestyle relay taking 4th in both with Personal Best times.

Kieran Kiely possibly showed the greatest improvement of our swimmers and put recent demons behind him. Showing remarkable improvement in the 100m Breaststroke, he may yet make a quality Breaststroker. His best position was 20th in the 100m Butterfly and once again 13th of the Scottish Swimmers. Again a big improvement in the 200 individual Medley but considerable work is needed to improve the Backstroke Leg to move up the rankings.

Tony Fletcher still has another year at this age group. It is becoming clear that next year Tony has a really good chance to challenge as he is clearly ahead of last years swimmers in his events. With a best position of 31st in the 200 Fly, 24th of the Scots swimmers,

Remember, there are usually 100 swimmers in each event, Scotland's best with numerous swimmers up from England. Rutherglen has got a good  number of qualifiers relative to its membership size.

Ryan, Kieran and Tony do not have the availability of  the number of expected weekly hours of training that other clubs do, however, what they do do, is mostly quality and rarely do they miss a session, with no mumping and moaning or misbehaviour. They are always looking for more work to do, not less, do their own sessions at other times and work Land Schedules prepared by their Coach. These are the qualities that set them apart from our other swimmers as we have a number of other swimmers  who are technically just as good. Watch out for our youngsters too, who are age on age ahead of our champions

Well done Guys but where are our Girls?

GLASGOW GRADED MEET TOLLCROSS
Saturday 4th February 2006

Rutherglen had considerable success at the high level Graded Meet at Tollcross. Despite the fact that we are still only in preparation phase of training the majority of Swims were long Course Personal Bests.

Two Gold medals were won by Hilary Gorman and Ryan F Doherty in the 100 metres butterfly, Another fine swim in the 100 Metre Butterfly by Keiran Keily.

Stephen Anderson continues to improve his other strokes with a fine PB in the 100 Metres Freestyle.

Calum McGibbon also had a good swim in the 100 metres backstroke.

Once again we need to concentrate on our starts, turns and finishes and in many instances this is where we continue to let ourselves down.

Lindsay Young, Head Coach.

SQUAD RE-STRUCTURE

The Squads shortly will be restructured and will come into place after the Summer Holiday. The idea is to make progression more logical and understandable

Everyone will receive a letter explaining in more detail soon, however the Squads will be:

Total Hours

Development Squad – 2, 1 hour sessions per week                                           2

Bronze - 2, 1 hour sessions per week with opportunity for 3.                             3

Silver - 3, 1 hour sessions, 1, 2 hour session per week.                                     5

Gold - 4, 1 hour sessions, 1, 2 hour session per week.                                      6-7

Platinum  Squad – 2, 1 hour sessions per week                                                 2

District Squad – 3, 1 hour sessions, 2, 2 hour session per week.                        7

Few swimmers will be greatly affected.

New Squads and Equivalents

Development Squad – current ‘C’ squad.

Bronze Squad – current ‘B’ squad.

Silver Squad – current ‘B+’ squad.

Gold Squad – current ‘A’ squad.

Platinum Squad – Current AX Squad

The biggest change is in the Coaching. I will Head all squads, however each Squad will have its own Coach responsible for their swimmers. This does not mean that the other Coaches will have nothing to do with you, as we intend to have as many lane Coaches as possible at every session.

Coaches

Development Squad – Andrew Molloy

Bronze Squad – Damian Fletcher

Silver Squad – Graham Mason

Gold Squad – Fiona Dyett

Platinum Squad – Lindsey Smith

District Squad – Head Coach

This is a new Squad and the proposed swimmers on the selection criteria based on District Qualifying Times. It is not automatic selection either but with discussion with the Head Coach. One or more of these swimmers may wish to remain in their existing squad. There is no squad size limit or age limit as such. There are approximately 6-8 other swimmers that are also very close and I would expect to join sooner than later in the next year.

Stephen Anderson

Ryan F Doherty

Tony Fletcher

Maria Marshall*

Ryan M Doherty*

Sean Haughey*

* denotes discussion required

I am hoping there will be additional training opportunities for everyone where appropriate, but particularly for Gold and Platinum Squads.

Scottish Amateur Swimming Association are not running the Academy this year and I intend running a very similar programme for our swimmers meeting the same criteria. On the last Sunday of the Month in September, October and November.

On Tuesday 5th April we held a Mini Time Trial. One of the reasons for this was to give Swimmers the opportunity to gain competition qualifying times.

Super Swims at Larkhall Mini League

Rutherglen Swimmers were in post Easter action at a Mini League Gala at Larkhall on Saturday 2nd April 2005.

Of 45 individual swims 43 were Personal Best times and every swimmer obtained at least one.

In their respective age groups, Ryan Doherty took Gold in the 200m Butterfly and 200 Freestyle, with a second place in the 100 Backstroke.

Alexander Kattenhorn took first and second place in the 200 freestyle and second in the 100 backstroke.

Claire Leslie who is still only 10, took first place in the 200m Butterfly, holding good technique throughout

Maria Marshall swam a fine 100m Breaststroke in just outside West District qualifying time to take first place.

Calum McLean and Christopher Anderson took 2nd place in their age groupings in the 200 Freestyle. Cameron Park only 8 years old, took third. Christopher Anderson also took 3rd place in the 50m Backstroke.

Another cracking swim by 10year old Hilary Gorman took third place in the 200m Freestyle

Sean Haughey coming back into form took 3rd in the 200 Butterfly

Tony Fletcher, had two very good swims and took 2nd place both in the 200 Butterfly and 200 Freestyle.

All the following swimmers recorded personal best times. Louise Smith, Jenna Pexton, Caitlin Clarke, Dorothea McInnes, Nichola Valente, Caitlin Boyle, Siobhan McColl, Amy Molloy, Paul McLaughlin, Andrew Gillen, Stephen Anderson, Tommy Smith, Katie Lundy, Louise Smith, Nichola Gaffney, Katie Petrie, Calum McGibbon, Liam Smith, Laura Valente, Kieran Keily.

Of particular note Katie Smith took 45 seconds off her 200 freestyle swim a great reward for a year of hard work and determination.

Rutherglen Swimming club were hosting the gala and it was very pleasing to see such good performances under the circumstances.

Well done everyone, a big thanks to all who attended. Also a big "thank you" to all the Parents who helped host the gala. This was our first hosting and quite stressful to all those concerned. Everything went well and the whole evening was a big success.

FAULDHOUSE GALA 14th NOVEMBER 2004

PLEASE READ AND TICK THE SWIMS on Pool Notice board

Below are the swimmers that I would like to go to the above Gala.. 8 and 9 year olds in the morning, 10 and 11 year olds in the afternoon. I have not sent you to Fauldhouse for fun but rather I think Fauldhouse, though less convenient, perhaps is a better gala for you. Please tick if you want to swim. Entries will close at the end of tonight, Tuesday 12th October 2004. The club pays the first swim, £2.50 for each additional one.

If you would rather go to Kingston, which for these swimmers I believe is less appropriate, please let me know. The cost of Kingston swims is £3.50, but then it costs less to get there, but it is an all day event.

If you do not tick you will not be entered. If we enter you there is no guarantee that they will accept our entry so all entries are provisional till you are notified of acceptance
