DECEMBER 2003 SOUTH LANARKSHIRE LEAGUE

A small group of Rutherglen swimmers went to Wishaw on Saturday on the last South Lanarkshire League match before christmas. All swimmers achieve fine personal best times in every event.

Ryan Doherty took second place in the 10 years 200m Individual Medley and second place shortly afterwards in the 100m Butterfly. Andrew Robertson (9) took 10 seconds off his 50m Butterfly time showing a lot of promise for the future.

Maria Marshall had two fine swims. The 200 Individual medley a hard event was followed closely by the 100m Freestyle with a 7 second PB, demonstrating her recent improvements in all strokes not just Breaststroke.

Louise Smith has benefited from her attendance at the SASA Flying start programme by reducing her 100m freestyle time by 17seconds, much to do with improved technique.

Swimming in a heat on her own, Katie Smith still managed to take 2 seconds off her best 100 metre backstroke time and showing theres lots more to come yet.

The Rutherglen Club Championships will be held on Tuesday 16th December bringing to a conclusion to 2003. During this time we have seen a dramatic improvements in all the swimmers performances. 2004 will be an exiting year for the  Club when we will move to the new pool at Trinity High School and will attain ‘SwiMark” status. The Programme for the new year is already starting to shape up, the first Gala outing to Grangemouth in early February.

A BUSY WEEKEND FOR RUTHERGLEN SWIMMERS

It was a busy weekend for Rutherglen swimmers who were in action and achieved personal bests and medals at Bellshill and Auchenharvie.

On Saturday, a short trip to Bellshill produced some excellent swims. Most swims were in personal best times. Bethany Robertson took of 15 seconds off her 100 metre Breaststroke time in her first Gala with the club; this was probably the best swim of the evening. Maria Marshall was another success story for the club when she took first place in the Girls 12 and 13 years Breaststroke. Other medallists were Claire Leslie who took 3rd place in the 10 & under 50 Metres Freestyle and Andrew Robertson took third place in the 10 & under 50 metres Breaststroke in a close race. Christopher Anderson, Alexander Kattenhorn and Lisa McGregor all achieved personal best times.

The next day more great results were achieved at the North Ayrshire Graded Meet at Auchenharvie on the Ayrshire Coast, despite Colds and flu reducing the team’s strength. Stephen Anderson took the gold in the 100M Breaststroke despite feeling under the weather. Jack Hamilton had strong swims in the Backstroke and Breaststroke and received a speeding ticket in the Freestyle. Jack showed his strength by having to dig deep to complete the 100 Metre IM after a gruelling morning. Shaun Haughey took a silver in the 100 metre and a bronze in the 100m Freestyle at Auchenharvie Tony Fletcher got a sixth place in a string of swims all in personal best times. Other swimmers showed great improvements including Hillary Gorman who showed improvement particularly in the 50 metre Freestyle. Jenna Miller reduced her time considerably in the 50 Metre breaststroke and Amy Molly, the clubs young breaststroker swan another fine 50 Metre Breaststroke but the most notable improvement was in her Front Crawl. With little time to recover from Bellshill Christopher Anderson and Claire Leslie were in action again and both continued to reduce their times despite competing in a large and strong field. Another good future prospect for the club is Michael Forrest who shone in the 10 year and under 50 Metre Freestyle in his first Gala with the club.

In the Afternoon session our older swimmers were in action every swim being in personal best times.

Once again Maria Marshall took Gold in the 100 metre Breaststroke as is capable of going much faster with some minor technique adjustments. Jordan Miller dug deep to take Silver in the 100 metre Butterfly as well as competing in every event in the afternoon.

Despite lacking confidence or was it just pre race nerves? Katie Petrie took Bronze in the 12 and 13 years old 100 metre Butterfly after telling the coach she could not do it. Katie Smith was disturbed by the quality of the opposition but was delighted to take Bronze in the 14 and 15 year old girls 100 metre Butterfly as well as good times in all strokes. John Carr also produced some fine swims showing great improvement moving up distance from 50Metre to 100 Metre events.

Lindsay Young the Head Coach was delighted at the performances. “We are now regularly challenging and winning events, with a growing number of swimmers. We are looking to consolidate this further over the next year. We are always looking for new young swimmers to join our growing club. We will be moving to the new pool in the New Year and intend to build on our successes. If you would like to improve your swimming at whatever level you want to achieve come and see us at Rutherglen Pool on Tuesday nights at 18.30. If you are an ex-competitive swimmer wanting to keep fit or develop your teaching or coaching potential, come and see us and help the Rutherglen area get back on the swimming map.”

Swimmers Hit Personal Bests at Season’s Finale

A squad of young Rutherglen swimmers went to Larkhall to compete in a junior open meet last weekend. This was the last gala for Rutherglen ASC before the summer break and the team saw personal bests galore.

The squad included Christopher Anderson, Ryan M Doherty, Andrew Robertson, Dianne Burchill, Steven Anderson, Jordan Miller, Jenna Miller, Kieran Farren, Sean Haughey, Calum MacLean, Ryan F Doherty, Jack Hamilton, Claire Martin, Louise Smith, Sarah Leslie and Claire Leslie.

It was one of those days when all the long hours for ploughing up and down the pool finally paid off and although everyone performed well there were some particularly notable performances.

Jenna Miller, Callum McLean, Christopher Anderson and Ryan F Doherty all did extremely well in finishing in the top ten in each of their events against stiff competition.

What was even more impressive was the raft of personal bests that were achieved by a good number of the squad.

Kieran Farren produced an impressive 7.3 seconds personal best in the 100 metres Freestyle and Sean Haughey bettered his previous best by 15 seconds.

Ryan M Doherty took nearly 5 second off his 50m Backstroke time and Andrew Robertson was better by more than 7 seconds.

The 100 metres individual medley is a tiring event where the swimmers have to swim two lengths on each of four strokes and Jenna Miller took nearly 19 seconds off her previous best to get 6th place.

Ryan M Doherty took over 8 seconds off his 50m freestyle time.

Jordan Miller took over 8 seconds off his 100 metres individual medley time, just to be beaten by Steven Anderson who took a further 4.3 seconds off his. Ryan F Doherty was not to be outdone by taking over 4 seconds off his 50 metres backstroke despite having missed training sessions recently.

The final session on Sunday afternoon had some tremendous performances by the young Rutherglen swimmers. Jack Hamilton took nearly 15 seconds off his 100 metres individual medley and Ryan F Doherty bettered his previous best by 7 seconds in the same event. Louise Smith took nearly 5 seconds and Claire Martin 4 seconds off their 100 metres Backstroke times.

But possibly the best race and individual performances were in the Girls 9 years 50 metres butterfly. Claire Leslie and Jenna Miller were in adjacent lanes. Claire improved her time by a massive 22.5 seconds just to beat Jenna Miller, who took over 5 seconds off her time despite a gruelling weekend of swimming.

Club coach Lindsay Young said; The club’s performance at Larkhall was a fitting climax to what has been a year of hard work and commitment by all our young swimmers.  “I am delighted with the way our young stars just keep getting better and better.  “The Club can now enjoy a well earned summer break, looking forward to the next session with a good year behind them.

Club Rejoins South Lanarkshie Mini League

A small squad of Rutherglen swimmers went to Larkhall on Saturday after the club recently joined the South Lanarkshire Mini League.

All swimmers achieved at least one personal best. Highlight of the day was Liam Campbell, one of the Club's young coaches, who took first place in the Mens 200m Backstroke and went on to get second place in the 400m Freestyle. Fiona Dyett another of the Club's young coaches took third place in the Ladies 200m Backstroke.

But the younger less experienced swimmers were not to be outdone. Maria Marshall came second, taking 7 seconds off her 100 metre Fly time in a close race, then came third in the 11-13 200m Breaststroke. Despite feeling below par Graham Mason got third place in the 400m Freestyle and the 200m Backstroke.

Other notable swims came from Diane Burchill, Clare Martin and Steven Anderson who all improved on their personal best times.

Lindsay Young, the Head Coach, was unable to attend as he was competing in the Scottish Team at the Royal Lifesaving Society’s National Lifesaving Championships at Manchester. He was delighted at the results and said “Once again our swimmers have shown the potential that exists in the Rutherglen area. There is an exciting programme ahead of us, the squad is growing in size and quality and the results of the swimmers hard work are starting to pay off”

Swimmers put Rutherglen back on the map

Rutherglen’s young Swimmers went to the Grangemouth Junior Age Group Meet on Saturday and returned with Medals and Best Times galore. 19 Teams from as far away as Northern Ireland and Buckie had swimmers competing in a high quality Meeting with a large entry.

Despite a number of Swimmers being absent through illness the teams performance certainly made up for the reduced numbers.

Steven Anderson headed the list. Lying provisionally 14th in the Boy’s 10 years 50m Breastroke, he took nearly 6 seconds of his Personal Best to get first place. Then came 9th in the Fly and 6th in the Freestyle, all in best times. His first competitive swim in the 100metre IM brought him 9th place

In the Boys Freestyle 4X50 relay, the team just missed out, John Carr swimming an exciting leg in 39.34 seconds.

In the morning session Andrew Robertson won Silver in the 8 years and under 25 metre Breastroke.

Ryan F Doherty got Bronze in the 9 years 25 metre Butterfly and 6th place in the Boys 9 years 50 metres Breastroke while Ryan M Doherty got 4th place in the Boys 8 years and under 25 metre Breastroke

The Girls swam well too and Hilary Gorman swam particularly well to achieve best times. Claire Martin took nearly 3 seconds off her Backstroke time and Rachel Moran swam a superb leg in the Girls Relay

Other Personal Bests were recorded by Caroline Marshall, Alexander Katterhorn, Amy Molloy, Euan MacDonald, Jack Hamilton, Jenna Miller, Anthony Fletcher, Kaitlin Cross, Alison Hill, Sean Haughey, Michael Leese, Fraser MacDonald and Christopher Anderson.

Lindsay Young, the Coach was delighted with their performance saying “I was proud of all our swimmers. They have shown what they can do given the chance, have set a high standard to live up to in the future and set a benchmark for others in the club to chase. After some difficult times Rutherglen Swimming club is back, and strong, thanks to our young Coaches.

SCOTTISH SCHOOLS – Local Heats

Graeme Mason, Maria Marshall and Layla Molloy have all recently taken part in the Local Heats of the Scottish Schools competition.

Graeme took part in the Glasgow Heats where he achieved several PB’s.

Maria and Layla represented their schools in the Lanarkshire heats on a long night at Cumbernauld. Both were in the same heat and well placed in an event with several heats.

Next year I hope that more of our swimmers qualify and that some go on to the Scottish Finals too.

FAULDHOUSE GALA SUNDAY 10 November 2002.

Despite a poor turnout, those swimmers who attended the Fauldhouse Graded meet all swam particularly well, nearly all achieving PB’s.

This was a particularly good event for our young swimmers from 7-11 years of age. The standard of swimmers from around eight other clubs was high, all Rutherglen swimmers did themselves credit. Unfortunately due to those who did not come we were unable to field full relay teams and we needed to borrow swimmers from another club to give our swimmers another event. It is a big thanks to that club and their swimmers for helping us.

Some swimmers who attended were only reserves and some unfortunately did not get swims other than relays. However we were able to get some people additional swims for times only.

Amy Molloy, came a creditable seventh in the 8 years 25metre Butterfly.

Ross Irvine got three PB’s in the 50 Breast, Back and Freestyle. He then went on to swim swim his 50 Freestyle faster in the relay than in his individual swim have just swum less than 5 minutes previously.

Alison Hill, Jack Hamilton, Caroline Marshall and  Jenna Miller all achieved good PB’s some as high as 7 seconds over 50 metres.

Claire Martin just missed out on a Pb but came third in her heat in a close finish.

Stephanie Silvetta and Caitlan Cross both swam strong legs in the relays event

Dianne Burchill unfortunately did not get an individual swim as all the events were full, however she swam the fastest leg in the 50 freestyle relay well under her PB time.

Thanks to Liam and Fiona for looking after the young swimmers and to the Parents for bringing the swimmers and arranging transport.

The next meet is Sunday 17th November at Castlemilk. Please can we have a good turnout. Competitions are a really important part in the development of our swimmers and Club and one way of measuring improvements.

Well done to all those who took part

Lindsay Young

Head Coach

The club took 25 young swimmers on Saturday 12 October 2002 to Larkhall to a Gala designed specifically for first time competitors. The event was organised by South Lanarkshire council who invited Lanark, Larkhall, Blantyre and Hamilton clubs too.

All of the Rutherglen swimmers did extremely well nearly all of them recording at least one personal best time. Many had never been at a Gala at a  pool outside Rutherglen and it was a new experience. There were many questions and last minute nerves. Everyone throughout the club learnt something and will be better prepared next time.

A good team spirit was seen as some swimmers won their heats or were involved with close finishes.

There will be more competitions coming soon and it is hoped that we can build on this and improve.

All swimmers should learn to know all their personal best times at each distance and stroke. They should always ask their times at Gala's after every swim. Any swimmer not knowing how they did at Larkhall should ask their coach on club night.

Gala's involve everyone not just swimmers and a big thank you to Parents for organising lifts and Club officials for Time Keeping and organising the young swimmers. Special thanks to our three young Coaching Assistants who gave up their Saturday afternoon to marshall and calm down the swimmers.
