Where there is more than one heat, swimmers will be seeded according to the times currently held in the clubs Hytek database.

The Head Coach hopes everyone will enter every event possible in their age group. Your Squad Coach will advise you if you have any queries.

Please note there will be limited spectating at the event. We hope to provide some bench seating and a limited amount of standing space poolside but it may be necessary for spectators to swap around to allow everyone to see their respective swimmers. Perhaps the best chance for you to see your children swim will be to volunteer on the day – we need runners, marshalls, timekeepers, judges recorders etc to ensure the smooth running of the event! YOUR CLUB NEEDS YOU! If you are a registered STO and your child is swimming we really need you to be available.

Denny Training – 2011/12

November 9th, 2011    Posted in General News, Lindsay Young

I am currently developing the programme for 2011/12, The past two years we have taken our young swimmers to Denny High School in January February where we cover the skills that are difficult to deal with at Rutherglen. THIS YEAR WE ARE STARTING EARLIER. The Denny Sessions have been very successful and the past two years have been instrumental in the Club making the Clyde Coast League Finals and preparing our 8/9 year olds for District Level at 10 years of age.

Despite the weather last year and the upgrading of the M80 we had great turnout. I have always felt we have not done enough sessions or started early enough. This year I intend to start in November, nearly two months ahead which should put our swimmers at a further advantage.

The Denny sessions, although 2 hours long are totally skill based. The swimmers have great fun, as I try to introduce challenges and games with a competitive edge. It is almost a new Pool with great facilities and the environment is such that Coaches can interact much better with the swimmers. Coaches are able to give much better feedback too.

There will be 10 sessions in this block and we need at least 20 swimmers to make it work because of Pool hire costs and Coaches coverage. I will be taking as many sessions as I can. This year other Coaches will have an input as I have to cover Galas too which sometimes clash.  At least one session will be taken by Alan Reed who amongst other Coaching achievements, has had swimmers at GB Nationals and currently is one of the Head Coaches on the Scottish Swimming District Regional Programme.

The 10 sessions are progressive, and cover all aspects and strokes. It is therefore best if swimmers can attend all sessions to get the most out of it.

All swimmers in any squad 12 and under at 30/6/2012 are invited. The cost will be £50 for the 10 sessions any cheques made payable to Rutherglen ASC.

In order to run this we need 20 swimmers and I need to have final numbers by Thursday 17th November 2012 to go ahead. There is a Sheet on the notice board.

I also intend to run this beyond the 10 sessions this year and will try and get at least one session at Stirling Swimming Academy which we missed last year.

An essential part of these sessions is TEAM BUILDING and practising relays. As such I would like a healthy split between Girls and Boys. As the Club is weaker in the Boys department it would be great if the Boys could make a special effort to go. With a small improvement with the Boys we could easily finish higher in the league than last year as we have one of the strongest girls squads in the West of Scotland.

Below is a list of the proposed dates:-  Please put your name on the sheet on the notice board if you would like to go.

Swimmer’s Goal Setting (Parents NOT Welcome!) – Wed 19th Oct

October 10th, 2011    Posted in General News, Lindsay Young

19.00-20.00 – Bronze and Silver Squad & all swimmers 11 & under.

20.00-21.00 – Gold & District Squad & all other swimmers 12 & Over

Land Training at Trinity High is closed on this night, instead we are going to hold a Goal Setting Workshop. It is hard for Coaches to discuss matters with swimmers in and around the Pool without affecting training sessions.

We are going to look at your PB’s, what you have achieved, what you could achieve, how often you train, how hard you train, your technique, land training, what you eat, what else you do in your life

We are going to look at the Club, Training Squads and how not only you get better, but also how the Club get better. Why you need the Club and the Club need you.

We will examine Long Term Athlete Development and what that really means.

There will be no Parents, only Coaches who have no swimmers in the Club so you will be free to talk openly to the Coaches without pressure from mums and dads.

If you really want to get better you need to come to this session.  This is a training session and just if not more important than you attend.

It will not be a lecture and should not be boring. We will give you guidelines but you are going to tell us you what you are going to do.

Rutherglen Challenge Saturday 5th November 3-6pm – Lifestyles

October 5th, 2011    Posted in General News, Lindsay Young

Our Annual Inter Club Challenge is likely to take place on the above date and venue. We will be competing against two other Clubs one is usually Kingston. This is our local “Derby” traditionally with whom we have a fierce rivalry. Kingston have recently made some big improvements.

This is a competition which we intend to try and win and I will be picking our strongest scoring team to make this possible. It is essential that if we want to win, all swimmers aged 12 and under make themselves available. I will try and make sure everyone gets a swim, however it is possible that some swimmers may only get a relay swim.

We really need our strongest Boys squad so please keep this date free.

I will post a list of names on Thursday

Weekend Training

September 30th, 2011    Posted in General News, Lindsay Young

This from Lindsay:

Swimmers going to Ayr on Saturday should be training normally this weekend, Friday night and Saturday. This event is not something anyone should be resting rest for. This is a bonus fun  event for everyone, and I will be disappointed and will be making note if anyone skips their sessions just because they are going to the Winter league. Our Coaches are trying hard to help you get better and most swimmers do not do enough sessions at their level as it is. Swimmers who normally train on Sunday and are at the Development Meet at Larkhall are excused training only because the times clash!

Congratulations Ghais and Ross!!

September 24th, 2011    Posted in General News, Lindsay Young

Congratulations to Ghais Guarin and Ross Leslie who as a result of their ranking times in the West District this year, are eligible for selection for the Scotland West Team that will be representing the West District in the National Counties Championship at Ponds Forge, Sheffield on 15/16th October 2011.

These are the first known Rutherglen swimmers ever to have achieved this.

SOUTH LANARKHIRE SCHOOLS SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHPS 2011

September 23rd, 2011    Posted in General News, Lindsay Young

Your school should now have the entry forms for this event and it is their responsibility to enter you not Rutherglen Swimming Club.

I will have quite a few parents coming to me asking why their child has not got times.  2000 and later swimmers times are quite tough. 1999 and earlier swimmers need 200/400m times as well.

However, this event is an important part of your swimming development and I do not want you to miss out. Schools have little knowledge about swimming and even less usually about your swimming ability!

The entry times are not easy particularly for 1999 and earlier. I will provide you with a letter for your school  on Tuesday 27th September with your PB’s and the events I expect you to do. If I do not give you a letter you have not got all the necessary times or events to enter. If the school then enters you, that is up to them.

MAKE SURE YOUR SCHOOL ENTERS YOU IN THE CORRECT EVENT AND ON TIME

Although many swimmers have got some qualifying times this year if you are born 1999 or earlier you have to be entered in a 200m event or 400m event. Once again, here lies the problem that not enough swimmers take the 200m events or above seriously, think they will take the easy route and miss out when it comes to events like these. From 9 years old you should be working towards 200m events, 25, 50 and 100m swims are fun events and will limit your progress.

Swimmers born 2000 or later are allowed to swim 3 events and a relay.  Personally I would recommend swim max two and three only in a few cases. Remember everyone does Freestyle, Backstroke and Breaststroke. So do Butterfly to improve your chances, all your strokes will improve long term if you do Butterfly, even if you are not successful this time.

The School pays you entry fee and if your school has 4 swimmers born 1999 or earlier make sure you get a relay team in too.

Although this is a schools event, it is run by South Lanarkshire Leisure and Rutherglen ASC supplies officials to ensure this meet is fully accredited.

Your Coach/Coaches also go along unpaid to support you. We will sit together as Rutherglen ASC, however some Schools (Hamilton College) keep their swimmers together. You can wear Rutherglen Team kit or your Schools, nothing else…. Not even South Lanarkshire or South Lanarkshire Schools

Top 6 performances in each age group will be considered for the Scottish Schools Championships, three will go forward. You will nominate 2 swims if you are 1998 one of 200m or 400m, or 1 if 1999.

I hope to have letters for Tuesday 27/9/2011

Lindsay Young (Head Coach)
